Looks like photoshop clouds and plastic wrap, as well as a photo.

The pawn sits on the rook with a knight in front of him, with a paperclip delicately balanced between the top of the rook and the base of the pawn. The paperclip did not bend straight. :) The queen is in the shot mostly to hold up the king - you can't see it so well, but the king really has a gash out of his crown where the paperclip lies. (It was like that already, I didn't break my chess set for the picture!)
